Explore the Engines
For this model year, four different powertrains are being offered, two gas models, a hybrid and plug-in hybrid option. In 2005, Ford helped originate the hybrid SUV segment when it introduced the Escape Hybrid. Today, a decade and a half later, the 2021 Escape Hybrid has greater efficiency than ever with the plug-in hybrid offering 37 miles on electricity alone. Few competitors offer such electrified powertrains, and few are as engaging to drive as the Escape. Both Hybrid options have a 2.5L iVCT Atkinson-cycle hybrid engine. For gas engine models you can select from a 1.5L EcoBoost® or the 2.0L EcoBoost with Auto Start-Stop Technology. Both gasoline engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Selectable Drive Modes
Each of these modes is designed to help improve your driving experience and handling, no matter where the road takes you. When the road of life is going smooth, Normal Mode is a perfect balance of excitement, comfort and convenience. For fuel efficiency, the Eco Mode is designed to deliver maximum fuel efficiency and increase driving range. Sport Mode increases throttle response, quicker shifting and a sportier steering experience. It also stiffens the suspension for better handling and control. If your drive is taking you through water, ice, sand or gravel Slippery Mode will keep you on track. When snowstorms are in the forecast, Deep Snow/Sand Mode will get you where you need to go. This mode is designed to maintain control of your vehicle in deep snow or dry sand. Once selected, each driving mode modifies the electronic stability control system as well as the traction control system. All with the touch of a button and without you having to do anything more.
Available AWD Disconnect
A feature designed to help save fuel, the All-Wheel Drive Disconnect can completely decouple the rear axle. The onboard system uses information from things such as traction control, brakes, windshield wipers, road conditions, outside temperature and vehicle speed. With the accumulated data, an algorithm determines the optimal torque split. If AWD is not necessary, turning off the function can result in reducing drag and the overall energy demands of the drivetrain. As soon as the CPU detects a need, the AWD is almost instantly brought back on-line.
The Right Technology for What’s Next
Keep your eyes on the road with the available Head-Up Display. This feature creates an image in front of the driver on the windshield minimizing the distraction of having to look at the instrument panel. The suite of driver-centric features in the Co-Pilot 360 Plus adds adaptive cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic. This model year also adds traffic-sign recognition to its list of capabilities. The 2021 Ford Escape has the right features to take you confidently down the road to what’s next.
